VITIS Scholarship and Bursaries Program Extended by Three Years

Published Fri, Mar 29th, 2013

First introduced in 2011, the VITIS scholarhip and bursaries for students in outdoor recreation, environmental studies and conservation programs at Vancouver Island post-secondary institutions will be available for three more years to at least 2016.  VITIS President Eric Burkle said it is very gratifying that the board has extended this very worthwhile program.

These annual awards are given to students at the following institutions:

- University of Victoria (scholarship of $500)

- Camosun College (bursary of $500)

- Vancouver Island University (bursary of $500)

- North Island College (bursary of $500)

Successful applicants will also receive a copy of their choice of one of our Hiking Trails books.   Applicants are asked to contact the financial aid offices or websites of the respective institutions.  The selection will be made by each institution.

The new bursaries and scholarhip were created to give back to the community that has supported our books for the past forty-plus years, and to increase the interest, particularly among younger people, in the outdoors and and hiking.   During the past years, VITIS has also made donations to Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary, the Federation of Mountain Clubs of BC, the VI Spine, plus several parks and environmental organizations.
